Arthur Benjamin Sugarman left the UK for America when he was 20 and changed his name to Sherman, whilst working for his father's clothing manufacturing business. He moved back to Brighton to start his own clothing business. In 1963 he released the first Ben Sherman shirt. His garments intrigued but also had their criticisms as he used an array of pastel colours, which soon became synonymous with his clothing style. Ben Sherman clothing increased in popularity during the 60s and 70s, particularly amongst British Youth Culture and The Modernists (Mods), to the point demand vastly outweighed production. Ben Sherman passed away not long after but his legacy and identifiable style lives on
